After the J'naii evolved past having a gender, the notion of gender became offensive to them, and they started to view gender expression as a primitive form of life. These people, the J'naii, had a history of having two different sexes in society, but after years of evolution, many of them physically evolved into a genderless race. Soren is a character from a race of people who enforce a strict form of non-binary gender expression on its citizens. This moment hits everyone hard, including the audience, who never expected to feel such emotions from a background character. Picard delivers a tear-jerking speech that highlights her bravery. The away mission goes bad, and Sito does not return from the mission alive. However, it is revealed that Picard only did this because they needed someone to send on a secret away mission.
